MedSafe Protocol

Dr. Pape's pioneering research uses a visible symbol to decrease nurses' distractions and interruptions during medication administration and reduce medication errors.

These research ideas have been implemented within the Kaiser hospital systems in California and Hawaii, and many other hospitals across the country and the world.

Kaiser Permanente hospitals have certainly been leaders in seeing that the use of the visible symbol and other protocol works in reducing medication errors by decreasing distractions and interruptions for nurses. Kaiser continues to see an decrease in medication errors with the vest or sash.

The Texas Board of Nursing has recommended reducing distractions and interruptions using this process in one of their recent bulletins.

The process does work and does reduce medication errors. Nurses are happier, get their work done faster, and are more satisfied with having time for other activities.

Additional research studies have demonstrated a direct link to medication errors from distractions and interruptions.

RISKologic, LLC is a resource for the visible symbol in the form of a vest that slips easily over the head and tears away if desired. It is light weight and cool. Other safety products are available at this site.  This company designed their vest based on the vest at the right and patented the vest.
